Disney and MEAA sign performers’ enterprise agreement

on .

The Walt Disney Company (Australia) and the Media Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA) today announced that they have signed an enterprise agreement covering performers in Disney stage musicals. The agreement gives Disney increased rostering flexibility and modernised publicity provisions while offering significant benefits for performers including increased wages and a new clause covering the use of overseas artists.

Actors Equity president Simon Burke said:  “The inclusion of an overseas artist clause in the agreement is a real breakthrough given that it remains a major area of concern for Australian performers.  We are hopeful of securing other sectoral agreements or company-specific agreements along similar lines.”

Following our meeting with representatives of the eight major theatre companies, Equity expects a document covering their use of imported artists to be finalised in the next few weeks.

Helpmanns tonight

on .

Eddie Perfect and Christie Whelan Browne host the Helpmann awards tonight at Sydney Opera House. We congratulate all the performer nominees.

Last year’s awards were dominated by Equity’s "Live Theatres, Local Jobs" campaign and our call for LPA and its members to resolve the overseas artists dispute. Equity and LPA have since established a Live Performance Council and direct discussions are ongoing between Equity and producers on sectoral and individual agreements.

Live Performance Council

on .

Equity and Live Performance Australia (LPA) are currently arranging the first meeting of the newly formed Live Performance Council (LPC), which is expected to take place in June.

The LPC was formed as result of Equity members’ Live Theatre Local Jobs campaign and Equity’s call for dialogue.

The LPC is a significant new Industry Forum and represents a new stage of collaboration between the industry’s peak employer and employee organisations.

The LPC will be chaired jointly by LPA and Equity presidents, and will provide a forum in which the parties can regularly discuss important strategic issues and challenges affecting the industry  - and identify ways to meet those challenges.
